Everyone is an expert!

After reading this some people might think that I am a snob but I don't care because I feel very strongly about it. So here it goes...

'It's the best movie of all time'

'This was definitely the best film of the year and should win the Oscar for the best picture'

I am sure you must have heard similar lines being spoken quite often by people around you (some of you may have actually said so yourself). I find it ok if these lines are spoken very casually but it is blasphemous if the speaker is quite convinced and is willing to debate about it. I am not referring to someone who's a film critic or someone who watches loads of Hollywood movies. I am talking about the average joe who watches 10-15 Hollywood movies in a year and has probably not seen a single movie of a period before his / her birth.

I have met loads of people who make this mistake of giving their 'expert' opinion on the above subject matter. My question to these people is 'Have you seen enough movies released during the year to say that a particular movie was the best of the lot?' or for simplicity's sake 'Have you at least seen all the nominated movies to form such an opinion?' I am sure one can easily guess that in most of the cases the answer will be 'no'. How can then one make a statement like the ones above!

Just to illustrate my point, while watching the Oscars a few days back my flatmate made a comment that Slumdog should win the award as it deserves it. This comes from a guy who, given a choice, would probably rate any Adam Sandler movie as the best movie of the year (Just to make it clear, I too, am a huge fan of Sandler). This guy sees all the lowly rated comedies of the year and thinks that they are the best. He thinks that Mark Wahlberg is the best actor out there and has made the best movies around. What do you say to a guy like that!

Most of us Indians have been bred on a whole lot of stupid Bollywood movies (I am not saying that all of them are stupid) and haven't seen enough Hollywood and other language cinema to comment on these movies. Yet, people think it is intelligent for them to comment! I am not lamenting that people shouldn't give their opinion about a movie. There is no problem if someone says that 'I didn't like the movie' or 'It was boring' but to make statements like the ones above is simply not acceptable.

Everyone might think that they are connoisseurs of films. I, too feel the same but I will leave it up to my readers to decide whether I am one or not. To help you decide here are a few facts about myself:

1. I have seen 700+ Hollywood and Foreign Language movies

2. So far, I have seen 39 movies released in 2008

3. I have seen 72 out of top 100 movies on IMDb and 142 out of top 250. That is as of today - the list is very dynamic esp. the last 20 slots

4. I have seen 29 foreign language movies which include German, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, Swedish, Chinese and Italian

5. I have seen the following number of films in each decade:
1930 - 11
1940 - 16
1950 - 26
1960 - 27
1970 - 43
1980 - 67
1990 - 168
2000 - 381
What do you say...

  2. Whoaaa again!!! But how do you keep track???

I wish you said Bollywood, I would've given you tough competetion there... he he

But yes, I don't get to see a lot of English movies, but I do enjoy loads of Hindi movies and I like a few stupid ones as well...

To each his own I guess.

But its really crazy when ppl comment on Slumdog being the best of the Oscars when they do not even know what other movie has been nominated.

  3. @ Rakesh V - Yeah I know...it took quite an effort to achieve this :) Thanks for dropping by

@ Rakesh - I keep a list of all the movies I have seen and I keep updating it after every movie. Bollywood ain't for me man...I have had enough of that shit...am not reverting back to it...though I see some of the better ones once in a while. I always wanted to ask you about the widget you have where you put in the posters of the last movie seen...how can I do that?

  4. Thats not a widget. You just add a picture every time you see a movie and move it to the top of your list. On the top picture you add the words Just Seen... Simple :)

  6. @ Swats - I can see that you are pissed off at that statement but I stand by it as I am sure even most of the Indians would also agree with it. I have acknowledged that there are some good movies once in a while but as a proportion it is quite small. I had had enough of it and couldn't stand it anymore. As for the number of bollywood films I dont have a list and neither will I be able to make one but I have seen enough to form the above opinion.

  7. Im not pissed off..frankly, i just feel a little upset when ppl badmouth bollywood or disgrace Indian cinema..of course everyone is entitled to their opinion..

sadly, wht ppl don’t realize is the fact tht Hindi cinema is evolving.. v r definitely pushing the envelope

Filmmakers r increasingly experimenting with newer scripts, newer ideas..they r ready to risk it..and I think v shud appreciate this..

not all mainstream bollywood films r crappy..i know u hv acknowledged it :)

Im sure ure aware of TZP, RDB, BLACK, SWADES, CHAK DE INDIA..these films have changed the face of Indian cinema..we r a nation obsessed with cricket..and CHAK DE turned out to b such a massive hit ..a film tht had hockey as its backdrop!!

TAXI NO 9211 is a mainstream commercial Bollywood film..it had a beautiful message..beautiful!

SUMMER 2007 beautifully highlighted the issue of farmer suicides in India. It’s a different thing tht it bombed at the box office..

PAGE 3 ws so hard-hitting and real

Bollywood is coming out of the closet.. (read homosexuality)..MY BROTHER NIKHIL is a beautiful example of cinematic excellence..

PHIR MILENGE beautifully dealt with the issue of AIDS

MUMBAI MERI JAAN, A WEDNESDAY, SARFAROSH, LAKSHYA, CHANDNI BAR, SATTA, ASTITVA..i cud go on!

  8. @ Swats - I agree with you that Indian cinema is evolving and you have rightfully mentioned some of the names which clearly stand out (Out of the first lot I have seen and loved all except Swades of which I have seen a major chunk and liked). The problem is that there are very few movies like these in a year...they are more like exceptions...on a lot of occasions directors try to make something good but are unsuccessful...what results is crap...also the fact that a lot of these offbeat movies are usually copied from some foreign movie without even acknowledging the original (Deewangee is one example...it was copied from Primal Fear which was a masterpiece but this was a disaster).
I would not hesitate to say that it is more a fault of the viewing public that Indian cinema is like this as they are the ones who decide which movie is a hit and which is a flop...year after year movies like OSO are made and are big hits (I know you are a big SRK fan but I hope you agree with me that OSO was extreme crap...I love Karz and it is blasphemous that it was copied and made into something as degrading as OSO).
